PROFESSOR DAVID HANNAY
Second Chief of Clan Hannay
As the eldest son of Ramsay Hannay,
who died earlier this year at the age of 93, Professor David
Hannay has succeeded his father as the Chief of Clan Hannay.
This has been approved by the
Lord Lyon and acclaimed
at a recent gathering of the Clan Hannay Society.
Professor Hannay is a family doctor who trained at
Cambridge University and
St. George's Hospital in
London, before going to Glasgow
University as Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in General
Practice. After a period of family practice in Wigtownshire he
became Professor of General Practice in
Sheffield, where he
established an
Institute
of General Practice before returning to Galloway as a
partner in a local practice and Director of a Regional Research
Network. He has recently retired as a partner in the practice
but continues with some clinical work and is a research adviser
for the Royal College of
General Practitioners. . In 1978 he was a research fellow at
McMaster University in
Canada, and in 1997 was a Visiting Professor at the
University of Western Australia.
In the past, Professor Hannay has stood as a
Liberal candidate for
Galloway in elections for
Westminster and the
Scottish Parliament.
He likes playing bagpipes, both Highland pipes and Scottish
Smallpipes, and, when time permits, enjoys sailing. David is
married to Janet, who is a teacher and environmentalist with a
special interest in garden history. They have three sons, one of
whom lives nearby and the other two in Edinburgh. All three are
married and there are four grandchildren. For the past few years
Professor Hannay has been Convenor of the Clan Hannay Society,
and his wife Janet is Keeper of the Tartan. They live in the old
family home at Kirkdale, where they are partners in a hill farm,
and where Clan members are always welcome.
